Google Ads Data Refresh Policy: Keep Late Conversions in Your Reports

A Google Ads data refresh policy defines which reporting dates are reloaded, how revised values replace earlier extracts, and when a report is considered complete. Fetching only the previous day can miss changes to older periods.

The policy belongs in your marketing data pipeline. It should reflect the reporting question and source behavior rather than a convenient extraction schedule.

Choose the date convention

State whether the report groups conversions by advertising interaction date or uses an available conversion-date measure. These answer different questions. Google’s conversion reporting guidance explains conversion-related reporting options and field availability.

Keep the account timezone and period definition with the extract. Do not compare an API slice with an interface report using different dates, actions, or filters and call the difference a pipeline failure.

Define the extract grain

Document the resource, selected segments, account identifiers, and date range. A campaign-day extract and a conversion-action extract can have different keys and metric compatibility.

Use the table grain guide before designing replacement behavior. Refreshing a report safely requires knowing which source slice each stored row belongs to.

Use a deliberate lookback

Review observed conversion lag, adjustment practices, and the client’s reporting cadence. Choose a recurring lookback that covers the material changes you see, plus a separate process for deeper restatements when necessary.

A rolling period is an implementation choice, not a universal Google requirement. Measure changes across reloads to learn whether the selected window captures the revisions relevant to your reports.

Make reloads replace or merge safely

Use a stable unique key and a documented replacement strategy for the affected date range. If a load fails halfway through, preserve the last complete slice or mark the new slice incomplete instead of silently mixing partial and complete results.

Do not append a refreshed copy of the same reporting range without a deduplication or replacement rule. A retry should restore coverage, not multiply cost and conversion rows.

Record account coverage

Run recordWhy it matters
Expected accountsDefines the intended reporting population
Completed accounts and datesShows actual coverage
Failure and retry outcomesIdentifies missing slices
Extract and model versionsExplains changed definitions
Reconciliation resultConnects stored totals to the source

Distinguish a successful zero-activity result from an account that was never retrieved. Both can appear as no rows in a dashboard unless your run manifest explains the difference.

Reconcile a comparable source report

Compare a controlled account and date slice using the same selected actions, segmentation, currency, status filters, and date convention. Google’s reporting overview provides the API reporting context.

Check units for monetary fields and retain account currency. Do not sum different currencies into one financial total without an explicit conversion method and rate date.

Expose completeness to readers

A report refreshed today may still contain an account last loaded earlier. Use freshness and coverage checks to expose that condition. Explain whether recent conversion totals remain subject to revision.

Carry the policy into dashboard governance. When readers know which period was refreshed and what can still change, revisions become explainable rather than suspicious.
